Most people don’t need a toner. Modern cleansers don’t leave the residue old toners were designed to remove. A toner can be a pleasant optional step if you like it, or a way to use a specific ingredient such as an exfoliating acid, but it isn’t essential.
What toners were for, and what they are now
Toners were once used to remove soap residue and “rebalance” skin after harsh cleansers. Today’s gentle cleansers make that job largely unnecessary. Modern “toners” range from simple hydrating waters to active exfoliating solutions.
Types of toner
- Hydrating toners and essences: water-based with humectants. A light extra layer.
- Exfoliating toners: contain acids such as glycolic, lactic or salicylic. These are actives, with warnings and sun-sensitivity considerations.
- Astringent toners: often alcohol- or witch hazel-based. Can be drying for some people.
When a toner can be useful
- You enjoy the step and it doesn’t irritate.
- You want an exfoliating acid in a leave-on format, used as directed.
- You want an extra light hydrating layer in dry weather.
When to skip it
- Your skin is sensitive, dry or already irritated.
- It’s high in alcohol (ethanol) and leaves you tight.
- You already use retinol or other actives, and an exfoliating toner would stack on top.
- Your routine is getting too long to keep up. When your routine is enough.
Where it goes
After cleansing and before serum. Pat it on with clean hands or a soft pad, without rubbing. The order to apply skincare in.
Exfoliating toners and retinol
Using an acid toner and retinol on the same evening increases the risk of irritation. Alternate nights, or choose one. Use sunscreen daily with either. Combining products safely.
Reading a toner label
- Look for acids by name and follow frequency directions.
- Check for alcohol near the top of the list.
- Check for fragrance and essential oils. What fragrance-free means.
